It’s difficult to believe the 2013 San Diego Boondoggle has come and gone! The 2013 Reunion Team extends our most gracious thanks to the Members, Wives and Guests that made this reunion a successful event! The reunion party was 200+ strong. Our reunion was held on Shelter Island in San Diego at the KONA KAI RESORT and SPA. Accommodations were excellent and the water views and weather were outstanding.
The official dates for this reunion were 7-10 October; however many arrived on the 5th or 6th to help with setting up the hospitably suite and registration desk. We had at least 20 people involved in this effort. Thanks to all.
Our first event was the welcome reception on the 6th. It was held on the patio and connected to the hospitality suite. Food was provided to the Association by the Catering Department of the Kona Kai at no charge!
On Tuesday we had to be very flexible, our planned visit to NAS NORTH ISLAND was cancelled three days before the reunion because of the Government shutdown. Thanks to Doug Armstrong, local member living in San Diego, who was able to pull the rabbit out of the hat. He was able to arrange a tour to the Classic Rotors Museum in Ramona. The helicopters were very classic and some we didn’t know about! The trip was long but worth the effort. Lunch was held at the BAHI HAI restaurant on the eastern tip of Shelter Island.
Wednesday was golf day and as usual Bill Waters and Dick Mulder hosted a great event. Must say the golfing crowd is getting short on players, must have something to do with the age factor. The non-golfers did a bus tour of La Jolla, Old Town, and Gas District. They had lunch at the scenic Tom Ham’s Light House restaurant. Wednesday evening we had a dinner cruise on the HORNBLOWER that took us on a scenic tour of San Diego’s beautiful harbor. This may have been the highlight of the week’s events!
Thursday was an action packed schedule. We got back to work with our business meeting which was highlighted by members Jack McTasney, Vern Dander and retired U.S. Army Major Gamble Dick. Their presentation covered the rescue of Jerry Young, an HH-3 pilot, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions while attempting to recover downed troops in Laos. Major Dick and his forces were on the ground for several days attempting to rescue Jerry. Jack was low bird on the initial mission but after picking up some survivors his aircraft was hit and limped back to Khe Sanh.
Another great tour on Thursday took place on the USS MIDWAY of WWII fame; this was followed by a harbor cruise of the Navy’s shipyards. We saw many of the Navy’s latest high tech stealth warships. The USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Carl Vinson were also moored at NAS NORTH ISLAND. Our Farewell Banquet was also held on Thursday at the Kona Kai Ballroom. The evening ended with the announcement of the Silent Auction’s successful bidders. The funds will go to the charities selected by our Membership.
SEE ALL OF YOU IN CHARLESTON, SC IN 2015!
TREASURER’S CORNER – Bob Strout
As of the middle of November, our Financial Picture is very good. The Reunion T-Shirt Sales were added to the Silent Auction monies, and we sent $631 each to the Wounded Warrior Project and The Home Front Cares. My thanks for all your support!
The Kona Kai Resort picked up some of the expenses that we thought the Organization would have to pay, which helped us end the Reunion on a positive basis.
We currently have $33,041 in our Bank accounts, and no bills outstanding.

HISTORIAN NOTES – KV Hall (email@example.com)
I received some items from some of the members for the History files. I will disseminate and enter on the website as appropriate. Thanks guys, you are the ones that know the real history. At the meeting I was able to pass on to the members some information from emails etc. that I have received from family members and others that have crossed paths over the years. It was encouraging and I am glad that we have been able to affect other people’s lives by our efforts.
